Durham County FC

Club Background

Durham County Football Club was established in 1992 when local lad Jeff Bowes noticed that youngsters were football daft but were not playing for any football teams at that time.

Initially he formed two teams of Under 11's and 12's and in their first year played friendlies against local teams.

The following season 1993/94 they joined the Russell Foster Youth League.

As more youngsters of varying ages became interested in the development of the Club several new teams were formed.

Durham County F.C. are now one of the largest clubs in the Russell Foster Youth and Durham FA Leagues with 19 teams, both boys and girls, ranging from Under 8's through to Under 18's for season 2007/2008.

Club aims and objectives

The aim of the club is to encourage youngsters in the area to participate in the sport and enjoy the game within a competitive spirit.

During the course of the past years the skills of some of the youngsters have been recognised by the professional clubs in the area, eg. Sunderland, Newcastle United, Middlesbrough etc., who have invited them to join their Academies and Development Centres.

Within the last two years the club has been endeavouring to achieve higher footballing standards for the benefit of the youngsters.

To achieve this aim several managers within the club have qualified as football referees as well as acquiring official FA coaching certificates.

We are always keen to hear from people who may be interested in joining the football club so please feel free to contact us via our website or by telephoning any of the Managers.

Umbro Football Hero and his "Special club"

Pictured above is Football Club Chairman Derrick Gurney as he became the North East's first ever winner of the Umbro Football Hero, receving his award from Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.

Despite being immensely proud of this fantastic personal achievement Derrick was keen to recognise the contribution made by the whole football club and the local community.

"I still can’t believe it," he said. "I’m so honoured to receive this award from Umbro. But it’s not just about me. This award is for all the people who help out at the club and in the community to make this club so special."
